Mattancherry Taunton
If you ever find yourself wandering around 10 Station Road in Taunton, there’s one place you absolutely shouldn’t skip-Mattancherry Taunton. It’s not just another Indian restaurant. It’s where South Indian tradition dances with modern culinary creativity. From the moment you step inside, there’s an aroma that hits you-not overwhelming, but intriguing. Smoky tandoori, tangy chutneys, and something unmistakably coastal. That’s Mattancherry for you.
The name might sound like a tongue-twister, but once you've tasted what’s coming out of their kitchen, you’ll remember it forever. The vibe here is casual but classy, perfect for anything from solo lunches to group dinners. And accessibility? No worries-there’s a wheelchair-accessible entrance and seating, though the toilet isn’t wheelchair-friendly, so do plan ahead if needed.
Now, let’s talk food. And not just generic curry-house food-we’re talking Bombay Chaat that crackles with spice and crunch, Chicken Lollipop that's crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and Kizhi Parotta, a Kerala-style delicacy that feels like a warm hug wrapped in banana leaves. If you're into dosa, theirs is golden, thin, and comes with coconut chutney that deserves its own fanbase. Prefer seafood? The Fish Thali is a coastal feast on a platter-spiced right, not shy on flavor, and served with love.
But it’s not just about South Indian classics here. They go all out with Tandoori Pineapple, which is honestly a game changer. It hits that sweet-savory balance with a hint of smokiness that’s hard to forget. And the Spice Crusted Lamb Tikka? Let’s just say it’s a must-try for anyone who wants their meat tender with just the right amount of fire.
Want something smaller to start with? The Punjabi Samosa hits the spot, flaky and well-spiced, while the Spring Rolls offer a veggie-friendly crunch. The Garlic Naan is fluffy, slightly charred, and great for scooping up anything with gravy-especially their vibrant curries or the thick, slow-cooked Tomato Soup with Indian spices.
Drinks-wise, the menu’s just as tempting. From Gulab Jamun to end on a sweet note to a surprisingly varied selection of gin, cocktails, spirits, and even organic wines, they’ve got something for every kind of diner. The beer list is impressive for a restaurant of this style-definitely not your average Indian lager situation. They also serve coffee, mocktails, and refreshing free water refills-a small touch, but appreciated when the spices hit.
For vegetarians and vegans, you won’t be stuck choosing between just two options. The team at Mattancherry makes sure there’s a solid selection of plant-based dishes, and the flavors aren’t watered down. They celebrate vegetables rather than hide them.
Whether you’re in for a quick takeaway, no-contact delivery, or sitting down for a long dinner with friends, Mattancherry Taunton adapts to the moment. It’s especially popular for both lunch and dinner, and solo diners won’t feel out of place either-it has that welcoming energy that doesn’t require a special occasion to enjoy.
It’s rare to find a spot that blends authenticity with experimentation this well. From street-food-style starters to full-fledged coastal thalis, from sizzling kebabs to innovative vegetarian mains, Mattancherry brings a full experience. Not just a meal, but a flavorful journey through the diverse regions of India-without leaving Taunton.
And hey, if you need a break from the usual, skip the same old chicken tikka masala and dive into something bold, fun, and deliciously different. You’ll thank yourself later.

What a VIBE! The interior of this place is so quirky, you wouldn't think you are in Taunton. I loved the unique twist on traditional Indian food, and it was all totally delicious. The lemon chutney with the poppadoms was Only sidenote; don't order dessert. Portions are teenyyyyy, and not worth the price.
Absolutely incredible meal! Totally different from our usual back home in Sussex, and the food was just fantastic! A wonderful welcome for us and our children, great suggestions and advice food wise. We also loved the fact they offer a Cobra Blond IPA as well as the usual Cobra, plus cocktails and a different selection of desserts from the usual!
Elevated Indian cuisine with additional dishes influenced by neighbouring Asian cultures. We visited on a Monday evening and were surprised to see that most tables were occupied. We had good prompt service, and the waiter enlightened us as to the special dishes that are original to their menu. My meal abridged was thus: Poppadoms: light crisp, moreish, and obviously homemade as per the condiments Starter: Fried fish in East Asian spices; incredible depth of flavour. The fish was slightly overcooked but delicious nonetheless. Main: Pondicherry Lamb; a lively Franco-Tamil-esque dish, which I assume is made with a sambar spice blend, It was the best gravy I have had outside of London award winning restaurants (where I would have to pay three times the price). Absolutely outstanding curry dish, no frills, just waves of flavour and heat that hugs long after the last bite. A curry so good I didn't want to brush my teeth before bed and ruin the lingering flavours! Our meal for 2 with starters and 3 rounds of drinks and service came to £75ish which I think was damn good value considering the quality.
I recently visited Mattancherry Taunton, a restaurant that comfortably seats around 50 patrons. While parking is not immediately adjacent to the venue, a short walk of a few minutes is required. The restaurant also features a banquet hall upstairs, likely used to accommodate overflow crowds. The ambiance is very pleasant and clean. Our meal began with paneer tikka and chicken lollipop. As a vegetarian, I can vouch for the paneer tikka—it was quite good. My companions had similar praise for the chicken lollipop. One standout dish was the muscle dosa, which exceeded my expectations. It was served with sambar and chutney, though the chutney could have used a bit more salt. We also ordered kadai paneer and garlic naan. The naan was freshly made and delicious, while the kadai paneer, although a bit spicy for me, was deemed perfectly seasoned by my friend. One order of kadai paneer is ample for two people, and we complemented it with some plain rice for the leftovers. My friend also tried the Mattancherry fish curry and found it excellent. The service was prompt and friendly, with two waiters efficiently managing the kitchen and dining area. There is also a bar with a good selection of wines and a few branded beers. I opted for a salt lemon soda, which was refreshing and aided my appetite. For those in Taunton looking for quality Indian cuisine, I highly recommend Mattancherry. It is one of the few places where both South Indian and North Indian dishes are equally delightful. Overall, I would rate the food, ambiance, and service at 4.5 stars.
I recently visited this restaurant and had a mixed experience. The food was decent but not exceptional. I expected a slightly better taste, but the food was average. While a few items stood out, overall, it didn’t quite meet expectations. The service was good, with friendly and attentive staff. Orders were taken promptly, and the staff was courteous. The ambience was the highlight of the experience. The decor was stylish, the lighting was perfect, and the overall atmosphere was warm and inviting—great for a relaxed meal.
